IELTS: General and Academic
The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) is the UK rival to the US TOEFL exam. Cambridge University produces the IELTS and the exam is growing in popularity all over the world. If you plan to emigrate to Australia, the UK, or another former British Commonwealth state, the IELTS is not only preferred more than TOEFL, but many times required. The IELTS and TOEFL assess your English proficiency in the four language areas plus grammar and vocabulary. However, notice these two key differences between the IELTS and TOEFL iBT exams. First, there are two versions - General and Academic. The General is mainly for immigration purposes while the Academic is of course for attending an English-speaking university. Second, during the IELTS exam (general and academic), you will actually be "interviewed" by a LIVE person. It may sound funny, but on the TOEFL iBT, you speak into a microphone to record your responses in the Speaking Section. SAT
The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is for high school students who aspire to study at a US university. Millions of US high school students take the exam every year and hope for the best score to win a scholarship and/or enter the university of their choice. However, an increasing number of international students who cast a gaze abroad to study are taking the SAT exam. When I taught English in Medellín, it was common to have 2 to 3 students per year who needed a high SAT score to study at a US university, like Duke, UCLA, or Purdue. These were highly-motivated and upwardly-mobile students who are at or near the top of their class in bilingual schools. Even in some bilingual schools, the English is not enough to pass the SAT. Advanced test preparation is necessary. In 2016, the SAT exam changes. The essay is no longer required, but many universities will probably request a writing sample for international students. The SAT is more a "thinking exam." Yes, you need strong English and math skills, but always remember - how you think and approach an SAT question is more important.
