SÃO PAULO – The Regional Labor Court of the 15th Region, based in Campinas/SP and Odebrecht reached an agreement on Thursday, March 16, the largest in the country regarding slavery and human trafficking. Companies in the group must pay 30 million reais for collective moral damage. 

The sum will be paid in 12 installments of 2.5 million reais intended for social projects approved jointly by the TRT of the 15th Region and Labor Ministry-Campinas. According to the Court's press office, the hearing of the case was one of the longest ever held, almost 7 hours long.

The decision stems from a conviction in the Second Labor Court of Araraquara (SP) of the construction company, Norberto Odebrecht S.A. and two subsidiaries, Odebrecht S.A. Export services and Odebrecht Agroindustrial, for promoting human trafficking and keeping more than 400 workers in slave-like conditions in the construction of the Biocom sugar and ethanol plant in Angola. In 2015, the company was ordered to pay 50 million reais.

Investments made by TAP during the year contributed to the positive result after the capitalization of the new shareholders. In Portugal, the company created TAP Express, offered new routes, and renewed the fleet of its regional flights. In addition, the company doubled its operations in the North American market, increasing the number of flights on existing routes and creating new ones.

According to data released today (21) by the Instituto Brasileiro de Economia da Fundação Getulio Vargas (Ibre/FGV), Brazilian consumers saw the average annual inflation lower by 0.3 percent from January to February, falling from 7.9% to 7.6%.

Relatives block exit of police from stations to demand payment of wages

The Federal Government decided to deploy 9,000 army soldiers and Marines on the streets of Rio de Janeiro to guarantee security on the eve of Carnival. The military intervention was made at the request of the bankrupt state government, which cannot pay its civil servants, including the police. The answer to the request by Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão (PMDB) for deployment of the military 20 days ago comes four days after dozens of wives and parents of military police decided to occupy nearly 30 police stations to impede their spouses from conducting patrols.  The protest movement demands better work conditions for the police and payment of back wages. Relatives provoked a disguised strike by the police who are prohibited from any demonstrations or refusal to work.  

Defense Minister Raul Jungmann on Tuesday announced details of the military force. Two days ago, despite the blockades, he said the situation in Rio de Janeiro was "under control."
